Studio 3 /// Landscape + Urbanism | Landscapes of Remediation

Year | 2016
Location | Sheffield Sheaf Valley

The studio will look at the idea of remediation as a driver for well being”

The Studio began the year with an initial area of research located within South Yorkshire, and speci cally the City of Shef eld. To focus the research we narrowed our area of investigation further to the Sheaf Valley, which is located to the south of the city and the river from which Shef eld takes its name. The sites position within the city provides a cross section across a broad range of social, economic and environmental wards of the city from the city’s Centre to its rural fringe.

As a studio, we felt it was important to develop a working de nition of remediation and how we would apply it to the studio to help focus our future work.We continued the theme of collective thinking and working in our initial research of the Sheaf Valley, working to produce a collective research resource to draw upon. We researched 6 key themes; Historical Context, Ecological, Infrastructure, Social and Political, Networks of Wellbeing, and Networks of Remediation.

This project builds upon the studio’s initial research in an attempt to answer the question “What is the potential for the Sheaf Valley to produce enough food to provide for the City of Sheffield?” through doing so it endeavors to identify local communities strongest characteristics and, through architecture and urban planning, suggest a way to place Sheffeld on the map as an exemplar for cities producing food locally.
